The work “OCOXAL” comes from the Aztec words “Ocotl” that means Ocote Pine and “Xalli” which means sand. The literal translation is Sand from Ocote Pines, making reference to the forest floor.
The “OCOXAL” (Pine Needle) is also known with other names in the region, such as: okoxal, ocojal, ocochal, cochal coxal, acoxal y cojal.
The pines used for these type of Handicrafts are: Mexican Weeping Pine (Pinus patula Schltdl. & Cham.), Montezuma Pine (Pinus montezumae Lamb.) and Smooth-Bark Mexican Pine (Pinus pseudostrobus Lindl.).
